It is with profound love and sorrow we share the passing of Gail Eva Marie (Fontaine) Ware McCarthy of Whitman, on August 6, 2026, just 10 days shy of what would have been her 88th birthday.

The only child born to Schubert and Kathleen (Lynch) Fontaine, Gail was a 1956 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Brockton, and a 1960 graduate of Salve Regina College; later obtaining her Master of Education from Bridgewater State College. Gail dedicated her life to educating children, serving both Rockland and Whitman Public Schools, and ending her over 45 year career as a teacher at St. Joseph’s School in Holbrook.

While working in Rockland, it was there she met and eventually married the love of her life, Lawrence F. Ware, with whom she shared 14 wonderful years of marriage before his untimely death in 1982. Settling in Whitman they raised their two beautiful daughters. Gail did not merely raise a family; she cultivated a sanctuary of curiosity and independent thought. She taught her children that hospitality was an art form and that love is expressed in daily, deliberate acts of kindness. Her laughter was loud and her empathy was boundless. She was a true matriarch and the undisputed heart of every holiday gathering.

Gail endured a life of quiet elegance and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Whether spending the summers in Sandwich or long weekends in Bourne, her heart belonged to ‘Old Cape Cod.’ She enjoyed long walks along The Boardwalk and sunbathing at Old Silver Beach with her go-to cup of chowder and a lobster roll. She loved slow mornings with a good hot cup of coffee and tranquil evenings with a glass of champagne.

Gail was fiercely independent and steadfastly loyal. She lived a life defined by her Catholic faith and was a long time parishioner and CCD teacher at Holy Ghost Church. Her greatest achievement was being a grandmother to her four handsome grandsons who affectionately referred to her as Nanny or just simply, Nan. She longed to be in their presence, bask in their glow, and share in their success. When she wasn’t being their personal caregiver, private chef or chauffeur, she could be found at the soccer, baseball, and lacrosse fields or at a track meet. She never missed a chance to be at the ice rink for a hockey game.

Her legacy lives on in the traditions she created, the values she passed down and the love she gave so freely. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Kathleen Ware and her husband Dr. Dipak Panigrahy; her daughter, Jennifer; her grandsons Anand Panigrahy, Benjamin Ethier, Zachary Ethier and Alexander Ethier; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her former husband, Lawrence McCarthy.

Gail’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Palliative Care Team at South Shore Hospital as well as the staff of DFCI Weymouth for their tireless attention and commitment to patient care.

She leaves behind a world less vibrant with her absence but deeply enriched by her touch. At the request of her family, Gail’s services will be private.
