Obituary

The family of James “Jim” Arena Sr. is deeply saddened to announce his passing on July 20, 2026. Jim passed away peacefully at his Hanson home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brockton on November 14, 1943 as the second of seven children to Mary Balonis and Joseph Arena.

Jim is survived by his adoring wife and soulmate, Sandra “Sandy” Arena. The two shared a beautiful marriage of 63 years, built on laughter, adventures, and cherished memories. Jim never tried to be extraordinary - he simply was. He made his friends and family feel like they were his whole world. He loved nothing more than taking a long ride on his Harley with his 49ers buddies, a good bocce roll, fishing down by the canal, and spending quality time with his loved ones.

He was a legend in that heavy equipment operating world who was especially skilled in operating Caterpillar excavators and bulldozers. Jim leaves behind a legacy that his family will carry forward with the same compassion, grit, and authenticity he lived by.

He will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Lisa Arena and her partner Fred Bielawski of Watertown, Michelle Arena Grant of Newburyport, James Arena Jr. of Hanson, and John Arena and his partner Jennifer Neville of West Bridgewater. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Arena of Hanson, James Arena and his wife Katherine of Pembroke, and TJ Grant of Newburyport, as well as great granddaughter Ivy Arena of Pembroke. Jim leaves behind his brothers, Robert Arena and his wife Bonnie of Kingston, and Paul Arena and his late wife Kareen of Rockland. He was preceded in death by four of his siblings, Joseph Arena of Brockton, Candy (Arena) Davis of Lampasas TX, Harry Arena of Rockland, and Peter Arena of Rockland. Jim is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 26th from 3 - 6 pm at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, 666 Plymouth St. Whitman. Funeral service on Monday, July 27th at 11 am, also at Blanchard Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Central Cemetery, 170 Central St. East Bridgewater.
