Whitman – James E. Phinney, Jr. 73 died Saturday May 28 after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Janice (Barkhouse) Phinney.
Born in Bethlehem, PA and raised in Dorchester he was the son of the late James Sr. and Blanche (Rutt) Phinney and had attended Boston schools.
Prior to his move to Whitman 30 years ago James had been a longtime resident of Braintree. As a resident of Whitman, he had been a communicant of the Holy Ghost Church, where he had been a member of the church choir.
He had been an avid fan, and had enjoyed following all the Boston sports team.
He is survived by his children James A. Phinney of Newton, Mark J. Phinney of Medford, Frank Phinney of SC, and Lorraine Hargrove of SC, his brothers Dennis J. Phinney and his wife Elaine of CO, and Michael Phinney of Braintree and his sister Pauline Timulity of Braintree. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Sharon Cullins of Newton as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the predeceased by his brother Robert J. Phinney and his sister-in-law Linda Phinney.
His services will be held Friday June 3 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Thursday June 2 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
