Obituary

Jennie A. (Cummings) Hanby 89, died Monday March 2nd after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife for 66 years of Robert T. Hanby.

Born in Bethel, Maine she was the daughter of the late Alva and Jennie (West) Cummings.

During World War II, Jennie worked as a "riveter" in New York building air planes, later moving to Whitman in 1942 where she remained a resident for the past 67 years.

At the age of 51 Jennie proudly graduated nursing school and worked for the VA Hospital in West Roxbury until her retirement at the age of 62.

She enjoyed knitting, reading and crossword puzzles, but her greatest joy came from time spend with her family.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her children Robert Hanby of Maine, Gayle Hanby of Whitman, Stephen Hanby and his wife Marsha of Plymouth, Donald Hanby and his wife Amy of East Bridgewater, and Nicole Hanby of Whitman, her sister Esther Anderson of Brockton, her sister-in-law Mardie Cummings of West Bridgewater, her grandchildren Heather, Cara, Bob, Elaine and Eric as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Randy, Charles, and Harold Cummings, Mary Rowell, Jessie Kelly and Elsie Tetrault, and mother-in-law of the late Doreen Hanby.

Her services will be held Friday March 6th at 11AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Thursday March 5th from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Assoc. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22313 or to the ASPCA, 520 8th Ave, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018
