Obituary

Neil James Akusis Sr., a dedicated carpenter and beloved family man, passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 81 at Boston Medical Center. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 21, 1944, Neil was the cherished son of George and Lorraine Akusis.

Throughout his life, Neil exemplified a strong work ethic, dedicating himself to the construction industry, which he both loved and excelled in. Known for his reliability, Neil worked alongside his two sons, instilling in them not only the skills of carpentry but also the importance of resilience—a lesson he believed was essential in an industry that tests one's strength. His pride knew no bounds as he watched both sons establish their own successful construction businesses, a testament to the influence of his mentorship.

Neil’s passion extended far beyond his trade. He was an avid outdoorsman who delighted in annual hunting trips to Maine with his late friend Roy Keene and spent countless hours fishing. Neil owned several boats over the years and relished the peacefulness of fishing at the pond near his home after retirement. Among his most treasured memories was a remarkable trip to Alaska with his sons, full of laughter and adventure.

In his heart was a deep love for his late wife, Jane S. Akusis (née Pierce), whom he met when she was just 13 and he was 17. Their 64 years together were filled with joy, as they enjoyed playing cards with friends, visiting local casinos, and spending quality time with their family. Neil is survived by his three children; Melissa Hammond and her husband Scott of Maine; Neil J. Akusis Jr. and his wife Tammy of Abington; and Paul M. Akusis and his wife Christine of Plympton.  One of Neils favorite memories with his children and his wife was Friday nights at their favorite spots for fisherman’s platters. This has been a memory they all have cherished.

Neil's love for family extended to his grandchildren—Jessica, Ashleigh, Rachael, Frederick, Alicia, Michael, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Paul—and great-grandchildren. He held a special bond with his great-granddaughter Justine, preparing pancakes and sausages for her every morning before school, precious moments that she will carry with her for a lifetime. The visits he cherished from his children, grandchildren, and siblings were a source of great joy, as was the presence of his beloved dog Sassy, who he adored.

Neil is survived by his siblings: Peter, AnnMarie, Lawrence, Jeanne, Clara, and Scott, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings George Jr., Stanley, Harry, John, and William.

Neil Akusis will be remembered as a strong man with a warm heart, whose laughter and love left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy endures in the stories shared, the smiles he fostered, and the love he spread throughout his family and community.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Abington Knights of Columbus, located at 254 Hancock Street in Abington, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 1 PM.
