Obituary

Shirley V. Butterfield (Westberg), 95, of Hanson, MA passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 18 th , surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Quincy, MA, Shirley was the daughter of the late John Westberg of Vermont and Irja (Karvonen) Westberg of Finland, affectionately known as Scotty and Westy.

Shirley married the love of her life, Thomas S. Butterfield of Hanson, MA and together they had four beautiful children. They made their home first in Pembroke and later in Hanson, where they raised their family. Shirley and Tom also spent 35 wonderful years at their home in Carver, MA. They shared 66 loving years married before his passing in 2016. For the past nine years, Shirley had once again made her home in Hanson close to the family she cherished so deeply.

Before retiring, she worked for over 33 years as a bookkeeper and service desk manager for BPM/Shaw’s.

Above all else, Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and family matriarch. Nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her large and loving family. She took an active interest in their lives and rarely missed a sporting event, celebration, or family activity.

In her younger years, Shirley loved traveling with her husband and family. They were always ready to jump in the car for a road trip across the country or pack up the buggy for one of their many weekend camping trips on Plymouth Beach. In her later years, some of her happiest moments were the simple ones—spending time with her siblings, sharing morning coffee, reminiscing, laughing, and enjoying one another’s company as often as possible.

Shirley also took tremendous pride in her home, which she kept beautifully and immaculately throughout her life. Reaching the remarkable milestone of 95, she watched her world grow from children to great great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving children Karen Forbes and her husband Thomas of Hanson; Ronald Butterfield and his wife Joan of Whitman; and Robert Butterfield of Norton, and his late wife, Nancy Butterfield.

She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Shannon and Brian Wright, Bridget Forbes, Kasey and Nick Sealey, Kalyn and James Lydon, Sean and Sheila Forbes, Shane and Amy Butterfield, Jill and Brian McQuirk, Ryan Butterfield, Brynne and Mark Wills, and Cara Butterfield; as well as her 18 beloved great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her two cherished great-great grandsons. She was predeceased by her son Thomas Butterfield Jr.; her sister, Irma (Westberg) Richards; and her brothers Clifford Westberg and Peter Westberg.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Friday September 25 th , 2026 at 10 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 @ the rotary) in Whitman, MA. Burial will follow at Fern Hill Cemetery in Hanson, MA. Visiting hours will be held Thursday September 24 th , 2026 from 4:00-7:00 PM.
