Obituary

Whitman - Shirley (Barrows) (Jerrard) Thorpe 94, died Tuesday September 20th after a period of failing health. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred Thorpe in 1995.

Shirley was born in Brockton on April 24, 1922. She was the eldest of five children of Howard Francis Barrows and Marion Gertrude (Ford) Barrows. Her siblings Carol Arnault, Loren Barrows, and Norma Barrows predeceased her. Mrs. Thorpe leaves her sister, Jean MacDougall of Falmouth, a son, Steven Loren Jerrard of Virginia and a beloved granddaughter, Amy Bryant Jerrard of Wilmington, NC. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mrs. Thorpe graduated from Lawrence High School, Falmouth and Hyannis State Teachers' College with a B.A. in Education and took graduate courses at Boston University. She enjoyed teaching Fourth Grade in Fairhaven and Whitman, MA and Second Grade in West Bridgewater. Her great joy was music, singing in the choir of the Whitman Congregational Church for many years.

Her memorial service will be held on Friday October 7th at 11:00 AM in the Whitman Congregational Church, 519 Washington St., Whitman, MA 02382.
