Obituary

Wesley John Martin, 93, of Halifax, MA, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026.

Born on March 3, 1933 at his parents home on Harvard Street, Whitman, MA. Along with his twin sister, Mary, to the late George John and Madeline Gladys (Ainslie) Martin. Wesley was the baby of the family by 15 minutes. He used to joke that he allowed his twin sister to come out first to check things out. If she didn't like what she saw he wouldn't come out. His parents had picked a girl and boy name. But they didn't know they were having twins. They didn't like how the boy name sounded with Mary. So they went through the Rockland telephone book. And picked a name they liked, Wesley.

In 1934 his mother entered a photo of Wesley and Mary in a contest a hotel in Boston was holding. The photo won an award. Wesley loved animals growing up. He had dogs, ducks, chickens and a cow. In 1945 he bought a Rhesus monkey for $40 from Chase Wild Animal Farm in Egypt, MA. About a year later he had to sell the monkey back to the animal farm as the family prepared to move. While growing up the family moved 11 times. By the time Wesley entered high school the family moved to Marshfield, MA. In 1948 he had two German pen pals. He won an honorable mention in an VFW essay contest in 1951. Wesley graduated Marshfield high school in 1951. After graduation Wesley took a job as a lineman on the assembly line at Olsen Tool & Die in Whitman.

Where he met Althea Bates, who was a welder. Some of their fellow employees dared Wesley to ask Althea out. He took them up on the dare. Wesley and Althea quickly became friends. And married on June 27, 1953. Wesley bought a lot for $125 on Lazel Street in Whitman. This is where Wesley and Althea built their dream house. Wesley was in the Army from May 1954 until he was honorably discharged on April 30, 1962. He did basic training at Fort Dix. Then was stationed in Georgia until he was sent to Germany for two years. Where he was a supervisor in a teletype office near Mannheim. Wesley loved to cook.

He opened Wes' Sub Shop in Kingston on July 15, 1964. Then moved the shop to Main street in Brockton. Then South street in Whitman. Where Lennie Baker from Sha Na Na would stop by when in town for the best tuna sub around. Wesley always had a story from the past to tell.

Wesley loved his family.

Wesley loved his wife. All the memories they made. And experiences they shared for 63 years. He loved his daughters. Dale Nance of Wareham, MA. Donna Latvis of Halifax, MA. And the late Dianne Panzarella of Elizabeth City, NC. His 11 grandchildren. Kristine Smith, Jennifer Richard, Virginia Nance, Sherrie Howes, Crystal Beckman, Karen Latvis, David Creech, Jason Creech, Andrew Creech, Aaron Creech, and Ian Creech. And his 31 great-grandchildren. Joshua, Tyler, Jillian, Jenna, Juliana, Jessa, Justin Jr., Josselyn, Dillon, Devin, Caden, Everly, Nolan, Wesley, Elias, Madaline, Destiney, Keylan, Tyler, Camren, Dominic, Braylen, Savanna, Micah, Elisha, Cameron, Sarai, Lily, Malachi, Kaydence, Desiree. Wesley is now at peace. Joyfully reunited with the love of his life, Althea.
